Living Large in Small Spaces
In the age of tiny homes and micro-apartments, living in small spaces may be fashionable and economical, but it can come with plenty of challenges. Since limited storage room and potentially cramped quarters are obvious concerns for small living areas, creating a functional living space in spite of those concerns may seem unrealistic. However, with a little research, creativity, and thinking outside-the-box, you can turn your small room or home into a welcoming living space for family and friends.
Pieces that Pull Double Duty
Furniture designed for multiple functions can be game changers when making the most of precious living space. A great example of versatile, multipurpose furniture are ottomans. Initially created as a comfortable foot rest, many ottomans today are designed with a space for concealed storage. Ottomans can also be used as seating when you are entertaining and running low on chairs. Sometimes it is up to you to find additional uses for a specific piece of furniture. An old family trunk or chest (preferably flat top) can double as a fantastic coffee table, and a kitchen island can also function as a pub table. You get the idea.
Make a Small Space (Look) Bigger
You may not be able to actually increase the square footage of a small room or space, but here are several tips and tricks you can use to make the area look and feel bigger:
- Create an open, airy space by inviting as much natural light as possible into the area. If you use curtains, make them sheer and light colored. Keep your wall paint shades soft and fresh, like cream or soft yellow.
- Fabric and texture matter. Heavy, dark colored upholstery will visually weigh a space down. Fabrics should be lightweight, like linen or cotton.
- Draw the eye upward with attractive wall art.
